Uses

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is used as a dietary supplement for the management of osteoarthritis, joint pain, and musculoskeletal discomfort. Some evidence supports modest benefits for reducing pain and improving physical function in knee osteoarthritis.

Do not use if

No absolute contraindications are established. Use with caution in patients with sulfonamide hypersensitivity, though cross-reactivity has not been demonstrated. Avoid in pregnancy and lactation due to insufficient safety data.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated. May cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, bloating, or diarrhea. Headache and skin rash have been rarely reported.

Warnings

Not a substitute for proven disease-modifying treatments in arthritis. Patients should inform their physician about supplement use, especially those on blood thinners or other medications, as potential interactions are not well-studied.

How it works
