Uses
Omega-3 fish oil is used as a dietary supplement to support cardiovascular health by reducing serum triglyceride levels. It is also used for its anti-inflammatory properties and to support brain, eye, and joint health. High-dose pharmaceutical formulations are indicated for severe hypertriglyceridemia.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to fish or fish products. Use with caution in patients taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents.
Side effects
Common side effects include fishy breath, nausea, belching, and loose stools. At high doses, increased bleeding time and transient elevations in LDL cholesterol may occur.
Warnings
High doses may increase the risk of bleeding, especially in patients on anticoagulant therapy. Diabetic patients should monitor blood glucose as omega-3 supplementation may affect glycemic control at high doses.
How it works
Omega-3 fatty acids (primarily EPA and DHA) reduce hepatic triglyceride synthesis and increase triglyceride clearance. They modulate eicosanoid production, exerting anti-inflammatory effects, and may favorably influence platelet aggregation and vascular tone.
Storage
Store at room temperature below 25°C, away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration may be recommended after opening to prevent oxidation.
