Contraindicated in patients with thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, or history of deep vein thrombosis. Also contraindicated in those with cerebrovascular or coronary artery disease, known or suspected breast cancer or endometrial carcinoma, and uncontrolled hypertension.
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, headache, breast tenderness, breakthrough bleeding, and mood changes. Serious but rare risks include venous thromboembolism, stroke, and myocardial infarction, particularly in smokers over 35 years of age.

Cigarette smoking significantly increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events in women using oral contraceptives, particularly those over 35 years of age. Women with migraines with aura should not use combined hormonal contraceptives due to increased stroke risk.
How it works
Combined oral contraceptives primarily inhibit ovulation through suppression of gonadotropins. Additionally, they alter cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and modify the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation.
