Uses
A first-generation antihistamine indicated for the symptomatic relief of allergic rhinitis, urticaria, hay fever, and other allergic conditions including insect bites and itching.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in neonates, premature infants, and patients with lower respiratory tract disease where sedation may worsen respiratory function. Avoid concurrent use with MAO inhibitors.
Side effects
Common side effects include sedation, drowsiness, dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, and blurred vision due to its anticholinergic properties.
Warnings
May impair alertness and psychomotor performance; patients should be cautioned about driving or operating machinery. Use with caution in patients with glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, or asthma.
How it works
Dimetindene competitively antagonizes histamine at H1 receptors, reducing the effects of histamine on smooth muscle, vascular permeability, and the central nervous system. It also has anticholinergic activity.
