Uses

Tigecycline is a tetracycline-class antibacterial indicated for adults with complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia caused by susceptible organisms.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to tigecycline or any excipient. Anaphylactic reactions have been reported.

Side effects

The most common adverse effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious risks include increased all-cause mortality compared to comparators, hepatic dysfunction, pancreatitis, and anaphylactic reactions.

Warnings

Boxed warning: increased all-cause mortality observed in clinical trials; use only when alternatives are unsuitable. Not indicated for hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated pneumonia or diabetic foot infections. Monitor for hepatic adverse effects.

How it works

Tigecycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, blocking entry of amino-acyl tRNA. It overcomes major tetracycline resistance mechanisms including efflux pumps and ribosomal protection.

Storage

Store unreconstituted powder at controlled room temperature. Once reconstituted and diluted, use within the time specified in the prescribing information.
