Uses

Intravenous or peritoneal solution of glucose and sodium chloride used for fluid and electrolyte replacement, maintenance of hydration, and as a source of calories. Also used as a vehicle for peritoneal dialysis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in hyperglycemia, hyponatremia when hypertonic solutions are used, fluid overload, or conditions where sodium or glucose administration is harmful. Use with caution in diabetic patients.

Side effects

Adverse effects relate to fluid overload and include edema, hypertension, and electrolyte imbalances. Hyperglycemia may occur with high glucose concentrations. Rapid infusion may cause local vein irritation or thrombophlebitis.

Warnings

Monitor serum electrolytes, blood glucose, and fluid balance during administration. Use with caution in patients with heart failure, renal impairment, or diabetes. Hypertonic solutions should be given via central venous access.

How it works

Glucose provides an immediate energy substrate following cellular uptake and glycolysis. Sodium chloride maintains extracellular fluid tonicity and supports electrolyte balance. Together they restore circulating fluid volume and correct dehydration.

Storage

Store at room temperature. Protect from freezing, excessive heat, and direct sunlight. Use immediately after opening.
