Uses

Deflazacort is a corticosteroid indicated primarily for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in patients aged 5 years and older. It is also used as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent in various other inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to deflazacort or any excipient of the formulation. Systemic fungal infections and untreated serious infections are also contraindications unless under simultaneous antimicrobial therapy.

Side effects

Side effects include weight gain, Cushingoid features, hyperglycemia, growth suppression in children, increased susceptibility to infections, osteoporosis, HPA axis suppression, and gastrointestinal effects including the risk of perforation.

Warnings

Prolonged use may cause HPA axis suppression, Cushing's syndrome, and hyperglycemia. Patients are at increased risk of serious infections; live vaccines should be avoided. Gradual dose tapering is required to prevent adrenal insufficiency upon discontinuation.

How it works

Deflazacort is a corticosteroid prodrug whose active metabolite (21-desDFZ) acts through glucocorticoid receptors to exert potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It has relatively less mineralocorticoid activity than equipotent doses of prednisolone.

Storage

Store at room temperature (20–25°C). Protect from light and moisture. Shake oral suspension well before use.
