Uses

Indicated for the treatment of hypertension as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensives. Also used in the management of heart failure and to reduce progression of diabetic nephropathy.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with a history of angioedema related to prior ACE inhibitor therapy or hereditary/idiopathic angioedema. Contraindicated in pregnancy. Do not co-administer with aliskiren in patients with diabetes. Contraindicated with sacubitril/valsartan within 36 hours of switching.

Side effects

The most common side effects include cough (due to bradykinin accumulation), dizziness, headache, and fatigue. Angioedema, hyperkalemia, and renal impairment may occur. First-dose hypotension is possible, especially in volume-depleted patients.

Warnings

FETAL TOXICITY: Discontinue immediately when pregnancy is detected; drugs acting on the renin-angiotensin system can cause fetal injury or death. Monitor renal function and potassium levels, especially in patients with renal impairment or those taking potassium-sparing diuretics. Angioedema requires prompt treatment.

How it works

Benazepril is an ACE inhibitor that competitively inhibits the angiotensin-converting enzyme, reducing the conversion of angiotensin I to the potent vasoconstrictor angiotensin II. This leads to decreased peripheral vascular resistance, reduced aldosterone secretion, and lower blood pressure.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from excessive heat and moisture. Keep in a tightly closed container.
