Uses
Topical combination of a potent corticosteroid and an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Indicated for inflammatory dermatoses with concurrent bacterial infection, such as infected eczema, secondarily infected dermatitis, and other conditions where both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial coverage is needed.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in viral skin infections (herpes simplex, varicella), fungal infections, tuberculosis of the skin, and rosacea. Avoid use on the face for prolonged periods. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to betamethasone, gentamicin, or any component.
Side effects
Local adverse effects include skin atrophy, striae, telangiectasia, perioral dermatitis, and acneiform eruptions from the corticosteroid component. The gentamicin component may cause local sensitization and, with prolonged use on large areas or under occlusion, systemic absorption with risk of nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity.
Warnings
Avoid prolonged use, especially in children, due to risk of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression. Do not use under occlusive dressings without physician supervision. Avoid use near eyes or on large surface areas.
How it works
Betamethasone is a potent fluorinated corticosteroid that suppresses inflammation by inhibiting phospholipase A2 and reducing production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Gentamicin is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit.
Storage
Store at room temperature below 25°C. Keep away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate.
