Uses

Peginterferon alfa-2b is indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C, typically in combination with ribavirin. It may also be used as monotherapy in patients who cannot tolerate ribavirin.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to interferon alfa, decompensated hepatic disease, autoimmune hepatitis, or severe psychiatric conditions. Also contraindicated in neonates and infants due to benzyl alcohol content.

Side effects

Common side effects include flu-like symptoms (fever, fatigue, myalgia, headache), depression, injection site reactions, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and alopecia. Serious effects include severe psychiatric events and autoimmune disorders.

Warnings

Monitor patients closely for neuropsychiatric, autoimmune, ischemic, and infectious disorders. Discontinue therapy for severe adverse reactions. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, renal impairment, or thyroid disorders.

How it works

Peginterferon alfa-2b is a pegylated form of interferon alfa-2b with extended half-life allowing once-weekly dosing. It exerts antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects by binding to type I interferon receptors, activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, and inducing expression of interferon-stimulated genes.

Storage

Store refrigerated at 2–8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. After reconstitution, use immediately or store for up to 24 hours refrigerated.
