Uses

Benproperine is a non-opioid peripheral antitussive indicated for the symptomatic relief of dry, irritating cough in adults and children. It suppresses cough reflex without the sedative or dependence risks associated with opioid antitussives.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to benproperine. Use with caution in patients with glaucoma, urinary retention, or prostate enlargement.

Side effects

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Numbness of the oral mucosa may occur if the tablet is chewed or sucked rather than swallowed.

Warnings

Do not use in patients with productive cough where suppression may be harmful. Use cautiously in patients operating heavy machinery due to possible drowsiness. Swallow tablets whole to avoid oral mucosal numbness.

How it works

Benproperine acts peripherally on stretch receptors in the bronchial epithelium to suppress the cough reflex. It does not depress the central nervous system at therapeutic doses and has some bronchodilatory and local anesthetic properties.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep in the original container.
