Uses

A combination of neurotropic B-vitamins and antioxidant used for the treatment and prevention of peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, and states of multiple B-vitamin deficiency. Also used as adjunctive nutritional support.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component. Use with caution in patients with low blood sugar, as alpha lipoic acid may lower glucose levels. High-dose vitamin B12 may be used cautiously in patients with hereditary optic atrophy.

Side effects

Generally well tolerated. Alpha lipoic acid may cause nausea, vomiting, or skin rash. High doses of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) may paradoxically cause peripheral neuropathy with prolonged use. Folic acid is usually well tolerated; rarely causes allergic reactions.

Warnings

Monitor blood glucose levels in diabetic patients using alpha lipoic acid. Avoid high doses of B6 over extended periods to prevent sensory neuropathy. Folic acid supplementation may mask vitamin B12 deficiency anemia; ensure adequate B12 levels before supplementing folic acid alone.

How it works

Alpha lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant that also regenerates other antioxidants and improves insulin sensitivity. Vitamins B1, B6, and B12 are essential neurotropic cofactors involved in nerve conduction, myelin synthesis, and amino acid metabolism. Folic acid is critical for DNA synthesis and homocysteine metabolism.

Storage

Store at room temperature below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original packaging.
