Uses

Oral penicillin antibiotic used to treat susceptible bacterial infections including streptococcal pharyngitis and tonsillitis, mild-to-moderate respiratory tract infections, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and prophylaxis of rheumatic fever.

Do not use if

Known hypersensitivity to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics (cross-reactivity possible with cephalosporins). Use with caution in patients with renal impairment.

Side effects

Gastrointestinal effects (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting), hypersensitivity reactions (rash, urticaria, anaphylaxis in predisposed individuals), and superinfection with resistant organisms. Rarely, interstitial nephritis or hemolytic anemia.

Warnings

Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions may occur. Obtain allergy history before use. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. Take on an empty stomach for optimal absorption.

How it works

Phenoxymethylpenicillin (penicillin V) is an acid-stable oral penicillin. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by irreversibly binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), inhibiting transpeptidation and leading to bacterial lysis. It is active primarily against gram-positive organisms.

Store tablets at room temperature below 25°C in a dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
