Uses
A mucolytic agent used to reduce the viscosity of mucus secretions in respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and acute exacerbations of COPD, facilitating expectoration.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to carboxymethylcysteine. Use with caution in patients with active peptic ulcer disease.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. May cause gastrointestinal upset including nausea, stomach pain, and diarrhea. Skin rash and hypersensitivity reactions are rare.
Warnings
Not recommended for use in children under 2 years without medical advice. Patients with asthma should use with caution as mucolytics can potentially trigger bronchospasm in sensitive individuals.
How it works
Carboxymethylcysteine (carbocisteine) acts on mucous glycoproteins, breaking disulfide bonds within the gel-forming mucin network and reducing the viscosity and elasticity of bronchial secretions, making them easier to expectorate.
Storage
Store at room temperature below 25°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
