Uses
Octreotide is a somatostatin analogue indicated for the reduction of growth hormone and IGF-1 levels in acromegaly, symptomatic relief of diarrhea and flushing in metastatic carcinoid tumors, and control of watery diarrhea associated with vasoactive intestinal peptide-secreting tumors (VIPomas).
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to octreotide or any of its components.
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, flatulence, gallstone formation, hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, and bradycardia. Injection site reactions may also occur.
Warnings
Monitor thyroid function, blood glucose, and cardiac rhythm during therapy. Periodic gallbladder ultrasound is recommended due to risk of cholelithiasis. Dosage adjustment may be required for antidiabetic medications.
How it works
Octreotide mimics the pharmacological actions of natural somatostatin but with greater potency and longer duration. It inhibits growth hormone, glucagon, and insulin secretion, suppresses LH response to GnRH, reduces splanchnic blood flow, and inhibits gastrointestinal motility and secretion.
Storage
Store refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C. Ampules may be kept at room temperature for up to 2 weeks for convenience. Protect from light.
