Uses

Sertindole is an atypical antipsychotic indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia in patients who are intolerant to at least one other antipsychotic agent.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sertindole, congenital long QT syndrome, hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, or clinically significant cardiac disease. Contraindicated with drugs that prolong the QT interval.

Side effects

Common side effects include QT interval prolongation, nasal congestion, decreased ejaculatory volume, weight gain, peripheral edema, and dizziness. QT prolongation is the most clinically significant risk.

Warnings

Sertindole carries a significant risk of QTc prolongation and sudden cardiac death; cardiac assessment including ECG is mandatory before and during treatment. Use with extreme caution in patients with risk factors for arrhythmia.

How it works

Sertindole is an atypical antipsychotic that antagonizes dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors. Its antipsychotic effects are mediated through selective limbic D2 blockade with relative sparing of striatal pathways, reducing the risk of extrapyramidal symptoms.
