Uses
Broad-spectrum combination antibiotic indicated for mixed infections involving both gram-positive (including penicillinase-producing staphylococci) and gram-negative organisms. Used in respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, and biliary tract infections.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins. Use with extreme caution in patients with a history of allergy.
Side effects
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Hypersensitivity reactions ranging from rash to anaphylaxis may occur. Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with broad-spectrum antibiotic use.
Warnings
Prolonged use may result in superinfection with resistant organisms or fungi. Renal function should be monitored in patients with impaired renal function as dose adjustment may be required. Avoid use in infectious mononucleosis as ampicillin commonly causes a skin rash in this setting.
How it works
Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum aminopenicillin active against gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Cloxacillin is a penicillinase-resistant penicillin active against beta-lactamase-producing staphylococci. The combination covers both susceptible gram-negative and penicillinase-producing gram-positive organisms.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
