Uses

Polycarbophil calcium is a bulk-forming laxative used for the relief of constipation and irregularity. It is also used to manage symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including both constipation and diarrhea, by normalizing stool consistency.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with intestinal obstruction, fecal impaction, difficulty swallowing, or hypersensitivity to polycarbophil. Patients with hypercalcemia should avoid calcium-containing formulations.

Side effects

May cause bloating, flatulence, and abdominal distension, especially at the start of therapy. Intestinal obstruction may occur if taken without adequate fluid intake. Hypercalcemia may rarely result from calcium component if large doses are taken.

Warnings

Must be taken with at least a full glass of water (240 mL) to prevent esophageal or intestinal obstruction. Do not use in patients with sudden change in bowel habits lasting more than 2 weeks without medical evaluation.

How it works

Polycarbophil is a hydrophilic polyacrylic acid resin that absorbs water and swells in the gastrointestinal tract to form a viscous gel, increasing fecal bulk and softening stool. It promotes peristalsis and normalizes bowel transit time. The calcium salt form reduces the hygroscopic tendency outside the GI tract for product stability.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–30°C), away from moisture. Keep in a tightly closed container.
