Uses

Alcaftadine 0.25% ophthalmic solution is indicated for the prevention of itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.

Side effects

The most common ocular adverse reactions, occurring in less than 4% of treated eyes, include eye irritation, burning and stinging upon instillation, eye redness, and eye pruritus.

Warnings

Do not touch the dropper tip to the eyelids or any other surface to avoid contamination. Contact lenses should be removed before instillation and may be reinserted 10 minutes after administration.

How it works

Alcaftadine is an H1 histamine receptor antagonist and mast cell stabiliser. It inhibits histamine release from mast cells and reduces chemotaxis and eosinophil activation, thereby preventing the early and late phases of the allergic response in the conjunctiva.

Storage

Store at 15–25°C. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
