Uses
Used for serious bacterial infections including respiratory, urinary, intra-abdominal, gynecological, skin, bone, joint, bloodstream, and cardiac infections.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to imipenem, cilastatin, or formulation components.
Side effects
May cause nausea, diarrhea, rash, hypersensitivity reactions, and seizures in susceptible patients.
Warnings
Serious hypersensitivity reactions and seizures may occur. Use cautiously in patients with CNS disorders.
How it works
Imipenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic, while cilastatin inhibits renal metabolism of imipenem.
