Uses

Sevoflurane is indicated for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in adult and pediatric patients for both inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures. It must be administered only by personnel trained in anesthetic management.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known or suspected genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia, and in patients with known sensitivity to sevoflurane or other halogenated inhalational anesthetics.

Side effects

Common adverse reactions include nausea, vomiting, agitation especially in children, hypotension, bradycardia, and laryngospasm. Respiratory depression, coughing, and dizziness may also occur.

Warnings

Risk of renal injury due to Compound A formation at low fresh gas flow rates. Malignant hyperthermia may be triggered in susceptible individuals. Respiratory and cardiovascular depression require monitoring. Use a calibrated vaporizer for accurate dosing.

How it works

Sevoflurane is a halogenated volatile anesthetic that depresses the central nervous system in a dose-dependent manner to produce general anesthesia. Its minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) in oxygen for a 40-year-old adult is 2.1%, and it decreases with age. The agent has low blood-gas solubility enabling rapid induction and emergence.

Storage

Store at room temperature. Refer to manufacturer labeling for occupational exposure limits; adequate ventilation is required in operating areas to minimize staff exposure.
