Uses

Indicated for the relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to nabumetone, or those who have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs. Contraindicated for perioperative pain management in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

Side effects

Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation), dizziness, headache, and rash. Serious risks include gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulceration, and cardiovascular thrombotic events.

Warnings

NSAIDs including nabumetone increase the risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events (myocardial infarction, stroke) and gastrointestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. Use at the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration. Avoid in late pregnancy.

How it works

Nabumetone is a non-acidic prodrug NSAID that is hepatically converted to its active metabolite 6-methoxy-2-naphthylacetic acid (6-MNA), a potent inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes. Inhibition of COX-1 and COX-2 reduces prostaglandin synthesis, producing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.

Store at controlled room temperature, 15°C–30°C (59°F–86°F), in tightly closed containers away from moisture.
