Uses
Topical pediculicide used for the treatment of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestations. Applied to the hair and scalp to kill lice and their eggs.
Do not use if
Hypersensitivity to phenothrin, other pyrethrins, or chrysanthemum plants. Avoid use in infants younger than 2 years without medical advice.
Side effects
Local skin or scalp irritation, redness, itching, or tingling at the application site. Hypersensitivity reactions are uncommon. Avoid contact with eyes.
Warnings
For external use only. Keep away from eyes, nose, mouth, and mucous membranes. Not for use on eyebrows or eyelashes. Wash hands thoroughly after application. Reapplication may be needed after 7–10 days to kill newly hatched lice.
How it works
Phenothrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that acts on voltage-gated sodium channels in the nervous system of lice, causing prolonged depolarization, paralysis, and death of the parasite. It has low mammalian toxicity at topical concentrations.
