Uses

Flurbiprofen is a propionic acid NSAID indicated for relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Lozenge formulations are also used for the symptomatic relief of sore throat.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to flurbiprofen or any NSAID, history of NSAID-induced asthma or urticaria, and in the perioperative period of coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include gastrointestinal events (dyspepsia, nausea, ulceration, bleeding), cardiovascular thrombotic events, hypertension, and hepatotoxicity. Renal impairment, edema, and skin reactions may also occur.

Warnings

Boxed warning: NSAIDs increase risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events and GI bleeding, ulceration, and perforation. Contraindicated for pain after CABG surgery. Avoid in patients with advanced renal disease or severe heart failure. Use with caution in elderly patients.

How it works

Flurbiprofen inhibits COX-1 and COX-2, reducing prostaglandin synthesis with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. It is rapidly absorbed orally, highly protein-bound, and primarily eliminated hepatically.

Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F) in a tight, light-resistant container.
