Uses

Pegfilgrastim is a pegylated granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) indicated to reduce the incidence of febrile neutropenia in adults and pediatric patients with non-myeloid malignancies receiving myelosuppressive anticancer chemotherapy.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with a history of serious hypersensitivity reactions to pegfilgrastim or filgrastim products, including anaphylaxis.

Side effects

Common side effects include bone pain, musculoskeletal pain, and headache. Serious adverse reactions include splenic rupture, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), serious hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis, and sickle cell crisis in susceptible patients.

Warnings

Monitor for splenic rupture if left upper abdominal or shoulder pain occurs. Evaluate for ARDS if fever, lung infiltrates, or respiratory distress develop. Use with caution in patients with sickle cell disorders. Avoid simultaneous use with myelosuppressive chemotherapy.

How it works

Pegfilgrastim binds to specific cell surface receptors on hematopoietic cells, stimulating proliferation, differentiation, and functional activation of neutrophil precursors. Pegylation extends the half-life compared to filgrastim by reducing renal clearance.

Storage

Store refrigerated at 2°C to 8°C in the original carton to protect from light. Do not freeze; if accidentally frozen, thaw in the refrigerator before use. Discard if stored at room temperature for more than 15 days.
