Uses
Roxithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic indicated for respiratory tract infections (community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis), skin and soft tissue infections, and urogenital infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to roxithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Avoid concurrent use with ergotamine derivatives due to risk of vasoconstriction.
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and headache. Hepatic enzyme elevations and skin rashes may occur. Prolonged QT interval has been rarely reported.
Warnings
Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. Monitor for signs of prolonged QT interval, especially with concurrent use of other QT-prolonging drugs. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea may occur.
How it works
Roxithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, resulting in a bacteriostatic effect. It has broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive cocci, some gram-negative bacteria, and atypical organisms.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C), protected from moisture and light.
