Uses

Favipiravir is an antiviral agent used for the treatment of influenza and, under emergency or conditional authorization in some countries, for the treatment of COVID-19 in mild to moderate cases. Its use is generally restricted to hospital settings or specific regulatory frameworks.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in pregnant women or women who may become pregnant due to proven teratogenicity. Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to favipiravir.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include elevated uric acid levels (hyperuricemia), elevated liver enzymes, diarrhea, and nausea. Teratogenic effects have been demonstrated in animal studies.

Warnings

Women of childbearing potential must use effective contraception during treatment and for a defined period after. Liver function and uric acid levels should be monitored. Use with caution in patients with gout or renal impairment.

How it works

Favipiravir is a prodrug that is converted intracellularly to its active ribofuranosyl triphosphate form, which selectively inhibits viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), preventing viral RNA replication across a broad range of RNA viruses.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature, protected from light and moisture.
