Uses
Used for serious bacterial infections when safer alternatives are not suitable, and for selected topical ophthalmic infections.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with previous hypersensitivity or toxic reactions to chloramphenicol.
Side effects
Bone marrow suppression, anemia, nausea, vomiting, and hypersensitivity reactions may occur.
Warnings
May cause serious and potentially fatal blood dyscrasias including aplastic anemia.
How it works
Broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit.
