Uses

A first-generation piperidyl phenothiazine antihistamine used for the treatment of allergic conditions including allergic rhinitis, urticaria, and other hypersensitivity reactions.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to mequitazine or phenothiazines, angle-closure glaucoma, urinary retention, prostatic hypertrophy, and in combination with MAO inhibitors.

Side effects

May cause sedation, dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, and blurred vision due to anticholinergic properties. Extrapyramidal reactions are rare but possible.

Warnings

May impair the ability to drive or operate machinery. Avoid alcohol. Use with caution in elderly patients and in those with epilepsy, hepatic impairment, or cardiovascular disease.

How it works

Mequitazine is a competitive H1-receptor antagonist that blocks the effects of histamine at peripheral H1 receptors. It has significant anticholinergic activity and a moderate duration of action.
