Uses
Pentoxyverine (carbetapentane) is a centrally-acting antitussive used for the temporary relief of dry, non-productive cough associated with upper respiratory tract infections and common cold.
Do not use if
Should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to pentoxyverine or any of its components. Use with caution in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Side effects
May cause drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and dry mouth. Nervousness or insomnia may occur occasionally. Discontinue and consult a physician if cough persists beyond 7 days or is accompanied by rash or persistent headache.
Warnings
Do not use for cough associated with asthma or productive cough with significant mucus. Use with caution in elderly patients and those with hepatic impairment. Store away from direct sunlight.
How it works
Pentoxyverine acts centrally to suppress the cough reflex, with some local anesthetic and anticholinergic properties. It does not have significant expectorant activity and is indicated only for dry, non-productive cough.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 15°C and 25°C, protected from direct sunlight.
