Uses
This combination is a topical pediculicide indicated for the treatment of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) and their eggs (nits). It may also be effective against body lice and pubic lice.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pyrethrins, piperonyl butoxide, or any component of the formulation. Not recommended for use on infants under 2 years without medical supervision.
Side effects
Generally well-tolerated. May cause mild skin irritation, erythema, or allergic contact dermatitis at the application site. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
Warnings
For external use only. Keep away from eyes. Do not use on broken, infected, or inflamed skin. Resistance to pyrethroids has been reported in some louse populations; consider alternative treatments if no improvement occurs.
How it works
Tetramethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that disrupts nerve membrane sodium channels in lice, causing paralysis and death. Piperonyl butoxide is a synergist that inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes in insects, preventing metabolic degradation of tetramethrin and enhancing its efficacy.
