Uses
Cranberry extract is used as a concentrated dietary supplement for urinary tract health, particularly to help prevent recurrent urinary tract infections by inhibiting bacterial adhesion to the urinary epithelium.
Do not use if
Use with caution in patients on anticoagulant therapy (warfarin) due to potential interaction. Avoid in patients with a history of oxalate renal calculi.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. May cause mild gastrointestinal upset, nausea, or diarrhea in some individuals. Long-term high-dose use may increase oxalate levels and risk of kidney stones.
Warnings
Not a substitute for antibiotic therapy in active infections. Consult a physician if symptoms of urinary tract infection are present. Standardized extract potency varies between products.
How it works
Cranberry extract is standardized for proanthocyanidins (A-type PACs), the active compounds that prevent Escherichia coli from adhering to uroepithelial cells, reducing urinary tract colonization without direct antimicrobial action.
Storage
Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight.
