Policresulen is an antiseptic with astringent and hemostatic properties used for the local treatment of vaginal infections, cervicitis, vaginitis, and as a cervical cauterizing agent. It is also used topically for oral mucosal conditions and wound care.

Do not use if

Avoid use in individuals with known hypersensitivity to policresulen or any ingredient. Do not swallow. Avoid application to large open wounds without medical guidance.

Side effects

Local burning or stinging sensation upon application is common. Prolonged or excessive use may cause mucosal irritation. Systemic absorption is minimal.

Warnings

Do not use for more than 7 days without medical supervision. Discontinue use if irritation, pain, redness, or swelling worsens. Not intended for ingestion; keep out of reach of children.

How it works

Policresulen is a condensation product of metacresol sulfonic acid and formaldehyde. It exerts antimicrobial activity by denaturing bacterial proteins, causes protein coagulation leading to hemostasis, and has astringent effects on mucosal tissues, promoting wound cleansing and healing.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–25°C), away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep tightly closed.
