Uses
Indicated for the relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children 6 years and older. The ophthalmic formulation is used for allergic conjunctivitis. Provides relief from sneezing, nasal congestion, itching, and ocular pruritus.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azelastine or any component of the formulation. Should not be used concurrently with central nervous system depressants or alcohol due to additive sedation.
Side effects
Common side effects include somnolence, bitter taste (nasal spray), headache, epistaxis, and nasal burning. The ophthalmic form may cause transient eye burning or stinging upon instillation. Sedation may impair driving ability.
Warnings
Patients should avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery due to potential for somnolence. Concurrent use with alcohol or other CNS depressants may enhance sedation. Contact lens wearers should remove lenses before applying eye drops.
How it works
Azelastine is a selective H1-receptor antagonist with additional anti-inflammatory properties including inhibition of leukotriene and cytokine release. It acts locally when applied nasally or ophthalmically with rapid onset of action within 15 minutes.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C. Protect from light and freezing. Keep out of reach of children.
