Uses

Iodixanol is a non-ionic iso-osmolar iodinated contrast agent indicated for intra-arterial and intravenous radiographic procedures including angiography, CT contrast enhancement, and urography in adults and pediatric patients. Not for intrathecal use.

Do not use if

Absolutely contraindicated for intrathecal use. Use with caution in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to contrast media, renal impairment, or thyroid disease.

Side effects

Common reactions include warmth, pain, or flushing at injection site. Serious reactions include hypersensitivity reactions ranging from urticaria to anaphylaxis, contrast-induced nephropathy, cardiovascular adverse reactions, and CNS reactions. Inadvertent intrathecal administration can be fatal.

Warnings

Never administer intrathecally; inadvertent intrathecal injection can cause death, seizures, cerebral hemorrhage, and paralysis. Pre-hydrate patients with renal impairment to reduce nephrotoxicity risk. Have emergency resuscitation equipment available during administration.

How it works

Iodixanol is a non-ionic, water-soluble iodinated contrast medium with iso-osmolality matching plasma. Upon intravascular injection, it opacifies blood vessels and organ parenchyma by attenuating X-rays. It is distributed in extracellular space and excreted unchanged by glomerular filtration.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature, 20–25°C (68–77°F). Protect from direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
