Uses

Desogestrel, as a progestogen-only pill (POP), is indicated for contraception in women, including those who cannot use estrogen-containing contraceptives such as breastfeeding women and smokers over 35. It reliably inhibits ovulation.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in active or past venous thromboembolism, current or past breast cancer, severe hepatic impairment, and undiagnosed genital bleeding. Also contraindicated in hypersensitivity to desogestrel or excipients.

Side effects

Common effects include irregular menstrual bleeding or amenorrhea, headache, nausea, acne, and breast tenderness. Mood changes and decreased libido are also reported. A small increased risk of venous thromboembolism compared to non-users has been noted.

Warnings

Women with risk factors for arterial or venous disease should be assessed before use. An ectopic pregnancy should be considered if pregnancy occurs during use. Regular breast examination is advisable given the uncertain relationship with breast cancer.

How it works

Desogestrel is converted to etonogestrel, its active metabolite, which binds progesterone and androgen receptors. At the dose used in the progestogen-only pill, it consistently inhibits ovulation—unlike older POPs—and also alters cervical mucus to impair sperm penetration.
