Uses

Zaleplon is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, specifically to reduce sleep onset latency.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients who have experienced complex sleep behaviors following zaleplon use, and in those with hypersensitivity to zaleplon or any excipient.

Side effects

Common side effects include headache, dizziness, somnolence, and amnesia. Complex sleep behaviors such as sleepwalking, sleep-driving, and other parasomnias have been reported and may cause serious injury.

Warnings

Boxed warning: complex sleep behaviors including sleep-driving may cause death; discontinue immediately if they occur. Risk of abuse and dependence. Use with caution in patients with depression or history of substance abuse.

How it works

Zaleplon is a pyrazolopyrimidine hypnotic that interacts with the GABA-benzodiazepine receptor complex, enhancing chloride channel opening and producing sedation. It has a very short half-life (~1 hour), limiting residual effects.

Storage

Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F). Dispense in a light-resistant container.
