Uses

Urofollitropin (purified follicle-stimulating hormone) is indicated for the induction of ovulation in anovulatory infertile women and for controlled ovarian stimulation in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with primary ovarian failure, uncontrolled thyroid or adrenal dysfunction, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, ovarian cysts or enlargement not due to polycystic ovary syndrome, sex hormone-dependent tumors, and pregnancy.

Side effects

Common side effects include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), abdominal bloating and pain, injection site reactions, headache, and breast tenderness. Multiple gestation and ectopic pregnancy are risks associated with gonadotropin therapy.

Warnings

Risk of severe OHSS; monitor ovarian response carefully with ultrasound and estradiol levels. Discontinue if signs of OHSS develop. Multiple births and pregnancy loss are associated risks. Use only under specialist supervision.

How it works

Urofollitropin is a purified preparation of FSH extracted from the urine of postmenopausal women. It stimulates follicular growth and maturation in the ovary by binding to FSH receptors on granulosa cells, promoting estrogen secretion and oocyte development.

Storage

Store at 2–25°C. Protect from light. Use immediately after reconstitution.
