Uses
Used for treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, and Paget's disease of bone.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in esophageal disorders delaying emptying, inability to remain upright for 30 minutes, and hypocalcemia.
Side effects
May cause esophageal irritation, abdominal pain, musculoskeletal pain, hypocalcemia, and rare osteonecrosis of the jaw.
Warnings
Follow administration instructions carefully to reduce esophageal injury. Correct hypocalcemia before treatment.
How it works
Alendronate is a bisphosphonate that inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and increases bone density.
