Uses
A topical sulfonamide antibiotic indicated for the treatment of conjunctivitis and other superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, and Haemophilus influenzae. Also used as adjunctive therapy in trachoma.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sulfonamides or any component of the formulation. Should not be used in the presence of purulent discharge that may inactivate the drug. Contraindicated with silver-containing preparations.
Side effects
May cause local stinging, burning, or itching upon application. Hypersensitivity reactions including rash, blepharitis, and contact dermatitis can occur. Systemic reactions are rare given topical application but cross-sensitivity with other sulfonamides is possible.
Warnings
For ophthalmic use only; not for injection. Prolonged use may lead to overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms including fungi. If hypersensitivity reaction occurs, discontinue treatment immediately. Patients with a history of sulfonamide allergy should be treated with caution.
How it works
Sulphacetamide is a bacteriostatic sulfonamide antibiotic that competitively inhibits dihydropteroate synthase, blocking bacterial synthesis of folic acid from para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). This deprives bacteria of an essential precursor for nucleic acid synthesis.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 8°C and 27°C. Protect from light. Discard if solution darkens.
