Uses
Used for chronic gout, prevention of hyperuricemia during cancer therapy, and recurrent uric acid or calcium oxalate kidney stones in selected patients.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to allopurinol.
Side effects
May cause rash, gastrointestinal upset, liver enzyme abnormalities, kidney impairment, and blood disorders.
Warnings
Serious hypersensitivity reactions including severe skin reactions may occur. Monitor kidney and liver function.
How it works
Allopurinol inhibits xanthine oxidase, reducing the production of uric acid.
