Uses

A non-steroidal antiandrogen indicated in combination with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analog for the treatment of Stage D2 metastatic carcinoma of the prostate.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to bicalutamide or any component of the tablet. Contraindicated in women; it has no indication for female patients.

Side effects

Common adverse reactions (occurring in more than 10% of patients) include hot flashes, pain, back pain, asthenia, pelvic pain, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, hematuria, and gynecomastia. Severe hepatic injury and fatal hepatic failure have been reported rarely.

Warnings

Severe hepatic injury and fatal hepatic failure have been reported. Monitor serum transaminase levels before starting treatment, at monthly intervals for the first four months, and periodically thereafter. Discontinue if jaundice or marked elevations in liver enzymes occur.

How it works

Bicalutamide is a non-steroidal androgen receptor inhibitor that competitively blocks the binding of androgens to cytosolic androgen receptors in target tissues. By inhibiting androgen action, it reduces the androgenic stimulation of prostate cancer cells, which are known to be androgen-sensitive.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature, 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
