Uses

This combination is indicated for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia and megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency. It is widely used during pregnancy to meet increased iron and folate requirements and reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, repeated blood transfusions, and other iron overload conditions. Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to either component.

Side effects

Common gastrointestinal effects of ferrous sulphate include nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, constipation, and dark stools. Folic acid is very well tolerated; high doses may mask vitamin B12 deficiency neurological signs.

Warnings

Keep iron-containing preparations out of reach of children as iron overdose is a leading cause of pediatric poisoning. Take on an empty stomach for better absorption; if gastric intolerance occurs, administer with food. Do not use high-dose folic acid without ruling out vitamin B12 deficiency.

How it works

Ferrous sulphate provides bioavailable divalent iron absorbed in the duodenum and proximal jejunum, replenishing iron stores for hemoglobin synthesis. Folic acid is converted to tetrahydrofolate, an essential cofactor for DNA synthesis and erythropoiesis, preventing megaloblastic changes.

Storage

Store at room temperature in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep tightly closed.
