Uses
Used in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection and in certain approved hepatitis B indications.
Do not use if
For HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis combinations, contraindicated in individuals with unknown or positive HIV-1 status.
Side effects
May cause nausea, headache, fatigue, abdominal pain, renal impairment, and changes in liver function tests.
Warnings
Monitor renal function and liver status. Discontinuation in hepatitis B patients may lead to severe exacerbation of hepatitis.
How it works
A nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor prodrug that suppresses viral replication after intracellular activation.
