Uses

Pirfenidone is indicated for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in adults. It is used to slow the progression of this chronic, progressive lung disease.

Do not use if

There are no absolute contraindications listed in the FDA label. Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include nausea, rash, photosensitivity reactions, fatigue, diarrhea, and dyspepsia. Liver enzyme elevations and drug-induced liver injury have been reported. Severe cutaneous adverse reactions may occur.

Warnings

Monitor liver function tests (ALT, AST, bilirubin) before and during therapy due to risk of drug-induced liver injury. Patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen due to photosensitivity risk. Severe cutaneous adverse reactions have been reported.

How it works

The exact mechanism of action of pirfenidone in IPF has not been fully established. It is a pyridone compound believed to have antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the production of growth factors and cytokines involved in fibrosis.

Store at controlled room temperature (20–25°C). Keep away from moisture and direct light.
