Uses

Used as an antipyretic analgesic combined with a barbiturate sedative in pediatric suppositories, primarily to reduce fever and relieve pain while providing mild sedation to reduce febrile convulsions.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment, known hypersensitivity to either component, porphyria, or significant respiratory depression. Caution in neonates and young infants.

Side effects

Paracetamol is generally well tolerated at therapeutic doses. Phenobarbitone may cause sedation, respiratory depression, or paradoxical excitability in children. Hepatotoxicity may occur with paracetamol overdose.

Warnings

Use with caution in children with respiratory compromise. Phenobarbitone has potential for dependence and withdrawal. Risk of overdose when combined with other paracetamol-containing products. Monitor liver function with prolonged use.

How it works

Paracetamol acts centrally to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, providing analgesia and antipyresis. Phenobarbitone is a long-acting barbiturate that potentiates GABA-A receptor activity, producing CNS depression, sedation, and anticonvulsant effects.
