Uses

Indicated for allergic rhinitis (perennial and seasonal), vasomotor rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, urticaria, angioedema, dermatographism, and cold urticaria. Also used as adjunctive therapy in anaphylactic reactions after acute manifestations are controlled.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in newborns and premature infants, nursing mothers, and patients with hypersensitivity to cyproheptadine or structurally related drugs. Should not be used with MAO inhibitors.

Side effects

Common side effects include sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, and disturbed coordination. CNS effects such as confusion, restlessness, excitation, and rarely convulsions or hallucinations may occur. Anticholinergic effects include dry mouth, urinary retention, and blurred vision.

Warnings

Overdose in infants and children can cause hallucinations, CNS depression, convulsions, respiratory and cardiac arrest, and death. Patients should be warned about impaired mental alertness affecting ability to drive or operate machinery.

How it works

Cyproheptadine is a first-generation antihistamine that competitively antagonizes both histamine H1 receptors and serotonin receptors, with additional anticholinergic and sedative properties. It is well absorbed orally, metabolized in the liver, and excreted primarily in urine.

Store at controlled room temperature (20–25°C). Keep in a dry place away from light and moisture.
