Uses

Topical capsaicin temporarily relieves minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains, and sprains.

Do not use if

Do not apply to broken or damaged skin. Contraindicated in patients with allergy to capsicum or chili peppers.

Side effects

A burning or stinging sensation at the application site is common and usually diminishes with repeated use. Severe burning, blistering, or persistent irritation warrants discontinuation.

Warnings

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken skin. Do not bandage tightly over the application area. Wash hands thoroughly after applying.

How it works

Capsaicin is the active component of chili peppers that selectively activates TRPV1 receptors on sensory neurons, causing initial release of substance P followed by receptor desensitization and depletion of substance P, resulting in reduced pain transmission.

Store at room temperature 15–30°C (59–86°F).
