Uses

Used as an oral contraceptive to prevent pregnancy in females of reproductive potential. Available as a progestin-only emergency contraceptive (morning-after pill) or as a component of combined oral contraceptives. Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in females with high risk of arterial or venous thrombotic disease, history of thromboembolism, uncontrolled hypertension, liver disease, known or suspected pregnancy, and smoking women over 35 years of age (for combined preparations).

Side effects

Common side effects include nausea, headache, irregular menstrual bleeding, breast tenderness, and mood changes. Serious but rare events include venous thromboembolism, stroke, and hypertension, particularly with combined preparations.

Warnings

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events with combined oral contraceptive use; women over 35 who smoke should not use combined preparations. Use with caution in patients with migraines with aura, hypertension, or diabetes. Not intended for use post-conception.

How it works

Levonorgestrel is a synthetic progestin that prevents pregnancy primarily by suppressing ovulation. It also alters the cervical mucus to inhibit sperm penetration and changes the endometrial lining to reduce implantation. It binds progesterone and androgen receptors.

Storage

Store at room temperature, 20–25°C (68–77°F). Store in a dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
