Uses

Dienogest, a progestin, is indicated as a contraceptive (often in combination with estrogen) and for the treatment of endometriosis. When used alone, it suppresses endometrial proliferation. It is also used for heavy menstrual bleeding.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in active or history of thromboembolic disease, hepatic disease, breast or liver cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, and known hypersensitivity. Contraindicated in smokers over 35 years when used in combination oral contraceptives.

Side effects

Common side effects include irregular uterine bleeding, headache, breast discomfort, depressed mood, acne, and weight gain. Venous thromboembolism is a rare but serious risk.

Warnings

Cigarette smoking significantly increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events with combination contraceptives. Monitor for signs of thromboembolic disease. Discontinue if jaundice or hepatic dysfunction develops. Not suitable during pregnancy.

How it works

Dienogest is a 19-nortestosterone derivative with strong progestogenic activity and properties of both 17-alpha hydroxyprogesterone and 19-norprogesterone families. It suppresses ovulation and inhibits endometrial proliferation by reducing estrogen effects. It also has anti-androgenic properties.

Storage

Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister packaging until use.
